REVIEW OF “SCENES FROM A DISCIPLINED MIND” BY THE EDITOR OF TD MONTHLY

I would like to begin this, my own personal review of, “Scenes From A Disciplined Mind”, by saying that the statement included in the advertising, ie. ‘15 articles on a disciplinary theme from renowned Malespank author’, does not, in my opinion, really do the author nor the book justice. This really is a very fine collection of male disciplinary-themed tales, that engaged my attention from the first story to the last, and all material in-between.

Beyond entertaining, I found this book to be quite enthralling, with the reading material within cleverly arranged in such an order that the reader never tires of the subject at hand, nor finds it monotonous to even a minor degree. This is not a book that contains a seemingly endless array of male disciplinary tales that one might find dull with repetition. It is a book that stimulates the reader’s imagination, and moves from stories to reminiscences to poems and back to more stories in a very entertaining and thought-provoking fashion.

The book itself is male-themed, with virtually all the material concerning the discipline of male rears: the exception being, “A Lesson For Miss Jones”, a story that nontheless, centres around the punishment metered out to Miss Jones’ companion/first love, a youth named Andy, with Miss Jones receiving her comeuppance at the end of the story. This particular youth, Andy, has already been punished in the first tale of the book, “A Private Rehearsal”, and in both these tales, the administrator of the punishments is a formidable lady by the name of Connie. With the final exceptions of the poem, “The Law Of Miss McKindrick”, and the tale, “A Visit To Miss Court”, all other administrators of punishment in the book are male.

Readers of a certain age, who have never known the trepidation that comes with waiting outside the Headmaster’s/Form Master’s study for a well-deserved punishment, will find the reminiscences both informative and entertaining: whereas, those of a more mature year will, no doubt, experience a certain nostalgia from the same reminiscences, and maybe even sympathise with the punishment boys in question, as the characters’ punished rears invoke their own special and painful memories.

More poems follow, including, “A Day To Remember”, which I found particularly enjoyable, before we move on to a final series of stories, 5 in total to finish. “Benny And Mr. Spong”, is the longest tale in the book, both thought-provoking and sad, as it tells the tale of a boy searching for a father-figure that he has always needed but never had. “Campbell Torrington Earns His Fee”, I found to be delightful: a tale set in the near future, at a time when it has been decided that Corporal Punishment must return to the Statute Books in order to control the misbehaviour of modern youth, and an unexpected opportunity arises as a result for a former Headmaster to abandon his roses and wield the cane once more!

“The Last Christmas Present”, finds two boys facing their comeuppance from a most unlikely source for throwing snowballs, and this is followed by, “A Matter Of Communication”, in which a young man’s mental prowess is stretched to the limit with a series of complex messages which he must deciper in order to receive the punishment he so desperately needs.

The final story is called, “A Classic Encounter”, and concerns a wealthy benefactor whose patronage includes his own reluctance to administer physical chastisement. Unfortunately, the boy pushes his patron beyond the limit of his patience, and, following lies which nearly culminate in the boy being sent to prison, the patron is forced to administer the hardest caning of his life.

All in all, 8 stories, 3 poems and 4 reminiscences, a collection of pieces that, I have to admit, upon reading I felt inclined to read all over again: as a say, enthralling and a very fine piece of work.

On a final note, my own Personal favourite? A difficult choice, but I’m inclined to opt for two instead of one and for different reasons. “The Last Christmas Present”, as it is so well-written and, “Benny And Mr. Spong”, because it quite simply tugs at the heart-strings.
